Exhibition: "Poetics of reality"

German avant-garde scenography 1989-2019

For decades, scenography has played an increasingly important role in artistic practices and discourses, in which the presence of concepts such as "scenic space", "theatrical", "dramatic" or "scenographic" has become habitual -and in some cases essential- in your configuration.

This has sparked a growing interest in scenography as a specific artistic practice. Poetics of the real is an approach to contemporary scenography through the creations of the latest generation of German set designers, unanimously considered the greatest reference of the international avant-garde. If anything characterizes his work, it is having made the real an ethical and aesthetic principle, to bring to the stage a truth and an autonomy that inherits and reformulates the legacy of the performative avant-gardes of the 20th century. That Anna Viebrock's sets resemble a cross between Benjaminian constellations and surreal artifacts; that the scenic spaces of Bert Neumann only seem like a set seen from behind; or that Katrin Brack's sets are often the recreation of natural phenomena, such as fog or rain, informs of the diversity of strategies and languages ​​of this avant-garde, whose creators include Annette Kurz, Aleksandar Denić, Rebecca Ringst, Jan Pappelbaum , Bettina Meyer, Klaus Grünberg, Nina Wetzel and the Rimini Protokoll and SIGNA groups, among others.

The exhibition has been curated by Antonio Marín, set designer and exhibition designer. His latest works include the design for the MNCARS of the exhibitions Máquinas de trovar, by Pedro G. Romero (2021, in collaboration with Mediomundo Arquitectos), Take me to another world, by Charlotte Johannesson (2021), and the sets for the works of theater Music and Mal, by Lola Blasco (Fernán Gómez Theater 2021), In the words of Jo... Little Women (Spanish Theater of Madrid 2020) and Yerma's Passion (Lorca Foundation of Granada, 2019).
