HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE is a project made up of the seven children of the great Phil Cohran, founder of “Sun Ra Arkestra” and “Earth, Wind & Fire”. It is obvious to indicate who has been his greatest influence. Added to this almost connatural artistic background are his own experiences and concerns, ranging from the sound of the New Orleans big-bands, through funk, Afrobeat, and some of the aggressiveness of hip-hop in his rhythm section. It was in 2005, with the sales success of his second album, Jupiter, that his international projection began. They have played alongside Prince, Mos Def, De La Soul, Talib Kweli, Maceo Parker, Blur and Erykah Badu; they have recorded with the Wu-Tang Clan, Tony Allen or Gorillaz, and have toured the main North American and European stages, from Coachella to Glastonbury, the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall. They have been invited to the BBC's “Jools Holland” program and in 2012 the song “War” was included in the soundtrack of “The Hunger Games”. With their most recent material, “BAD BOYS OF JAZZ”, they have perfected their formula, increasing speed, prioritizing pure emotion before any other leitmotiv. Trumpets and trombones draw developments that sometimes border on free with an eye on the avant-garde of the late sixties, but they add a high degree of fun, groove and freshness that makes them original, innovative and accessible at the same time. His composition has a certain classic aroma, but his way of interpreting it is rabidly fresh. Making the complex simple, and with great fluidity, this fabulous work by the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has deservedly earned its presence on the big stages.
