Description

A very special visit to one of the most impressive and unknown convents in the city of Seville. We will visit the interior of the convent to be surprised with one of the best examples of Mudejar and Renaissance architecture in the city, and with great works of art kept for centuries in its closure. A convent founded in 1,475 by Dona Juana de Santillán y Guzmán when she became a widow, which has become a benchmark within the city's historical-artistic heritage over time. It was declared a Historical Monument in 1931, with the Second Republic, it is the first cloistered convent with its own museum since 1976, a place where, through numerous artistic pieces, we can witness the evolution of art over centuries.

The pieces are exhibited in three rooms for this purpose, previously being different and important rooms of the convent. Its church and lower choir are other places where you can see works of singular importance, without forgetting its patios and facades, which tell us about the historical evolution, not only of the convent, but also of the city of Seville, since it is is reflected in its walls. Inside we can find very diverse pieces: sculptures, paintings, altarpieces, reliquaries, chasubles, etc. Works made by also unique artists, such as: Alonso Cano, Martínez Montañés, Alonso Vázquez, Domingo Martínez, Niculoso Pisano, Felipe Ribas, even the DellaRobbia workshop, among many others, who throughout history have left their mark on this convent.

Convent that, on the other hand, allows us to know closely this congregation and the order of the Hieronymites to which it belongs, its rules, customs and daily life.

Without forgetting the figure of Santa Paula, born in the year 347, she remains a widow at only 33 years old, at that moment she decides to change her life, going to live in the most absolute of austerities. In Rome she meets Saint Jerome, with him she goes on pilgrimage to different countries in the eastern Mediterranean, they finally settle in Bethlehem where she directs the three convents that Saint Jerome founded for women at that time.

The visit to this enclave aims to make known spaces, sometimes very unknown to the ordinary citizen, but fundamental to understand the history of the city and the culture to which we belong.
