Julian Lage's new vibrant and richly textured album, Speak To Me, is an intimate but ambitious journey through melody, emotion and narrative. Combining gospel hymns, rural blues, surf rock and jazz, Lage creates a diverse soundscape that speaks beyond the pale.
Written during an arravatament of inspiration at the beginning of 2023, during the next turns, these songs reflect the constant search for narrative through music. While contemplatives continue, as in the soft "Omission" and "Serenade", or rhythmically audacious with the explosive "76", each track captures a distinct emotional current.
The album presents a wide range of formats: solo acoustic, duos, his characteristic trio with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, and expanded arrangements with keyboards and vents. Produced by Joe Henry, Speak To Me balances Lage's improvisational skills with a deep respect for the structure of the songs, highlighting his evolution as a composer. The result is a collection that feels cohesive but spontaneous: music that is slowly revealed and rewards an attentive escort, shaped by trust, collaboration and a deep sense of purpose.
