Gallery 5 of the IVAM hosts the exhibition of Aref el Rayess The IVAM has prepared from May 11 to September 10, 2023 the artistic exhibition of the Lebanese «Aref el Rayess».
He was born in Aley in 1928 and at only 11 years old he began to paint;
After his first exhibition in Beirut at the age of 20, he began his artistic career, leaving his mark in various countries such as Algeria, Senegal, Paris or Saudi Arabia. Known primarily as a painter, he also practiced printmaking, sculpture, and tapestry.
And the truth is that the autodidact stood out for his concern with the political, social and cultural crises of his time, issues that prevented him from looking the other way.
Gallery 5 of the IVAM shows you his works centered from the 60s to the 80s with which his intention is to unite Western modernity with other modernities, all thanks to the learning that he has sown with the extensive journey of he.
Enjoy this spectacular representation through a seismograph that captures the desires and frustrations such as the insurrection of the Druze people (1958), the Algerian war of independence, the liberation struggles of the "Third World" and the war in Lebanon.
