Description
The Nigerian artist will create a specific project for Gallery 1 of the IVAM
What would you say "earth" is?
Otobong Nkanga provides an alternative meaning to social ideas of identity by exploring the notion of land as a place of non-belonging.
She takes as her starting point the systems that excavate raw materials locally, technologically processing them and distributing them globally.
From there she follows the threads that intertwine minerals, material culture, and the construction of desire with the redistribution of power and knowledge, with migration, transformation, appropriation, and loss.
How does she do it?
Through sculpture, drawing, performance, writing, and pedagogical formats, she offers a social and topographical dialogue with our everyday environment.
She talks about the land and the people who inhabit it with natural resources such as stones, fabrics, species or plants and their potential values to provoke narratives and stories related to the land.
