Venerated and Feared. Feminine Power in Art and Belief
May 8 - August 31, 2025. The exhibition explores the diverse ways in which feminine power has been venerated and feared throughout history. Feminine spiritual beings, both divine and demonic, have influenced our understanding of the world.
This exhibition highlights the many faces of feminine power.
Goddesses, spirits, demons, or saints, figures who have been venerated and feared to this day and who have influenced and continue to influence people's lives.
A journey through 5,000 years of beliefs in spiritual power: from the Hindu deity Shakti to Oshun, the fertility orisha in the Yoruba culture of Nigeria.
Featuring sculptures, sacred objects, and works of art from various continents and from the ancient world to the present day, this exhibition shows us how goddesses, demons, saints, and other spiritual beings have played a significant role in our understanding of the world. From wisdom, passion, and desire to war, justice, and mercy, it offers a cross-cultural journey through different expressions of feminine spiritual powers from around the world.
The selection of 154 pieces from the British Museum, in dialogue with a selection of renowned contemporary artists, invites us to reflect on feminine power and femininity today.
