Carmen, Beholden to No One
The story of a free woman
The life of Carmen Díez de Rivera was so extraordinary that it bears parallels to Greek tragedies, such as those of Antigone or Ariadne. Born into a bizarre set of family circumstances within the upper echelons of the Spanish aristocracy, she renounced her class privileges and went on to hold a position that no other woman in this country has ever occupied: Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister.
She did so during one of the most complex and intense periods in Spanish history: the Transition. She fought—often alone—against everything and everyone. Possessed of an unyielding will and an intelligent gaze, she was steadfast in her purpose: to guide her country toward democracy. Her strength and boldness in this public endeavor stand in stark contrast to her inner sadness—an inability to find peace, shattered since her adolescence by a family secret that haunted her.
On stage, Carmen—portrayed here by Beatriz Argüello—unfolds the pivotal moments of her intense and challenging political career, while reflecting on the intimate episodes that shaped both her unhappiness and her character. Through her recollections, some of the most significant figures in our history will appear before our eyes.
