Description
Jules Massenet undoubtedly sought to dazzle his time when he set Charles Perrault's fairy tale to music. With Cendrillon, the composer offers us one of his most attractive works. different from other lyrical adaptations of the tale. The mischievous Lucette and the women who surround her give the work a tone whose innumerable nuances confirm the words of Claude Debussy, who saw Massenet as “the musical historian of the female soul”. By adorning the fairy with an unreal coloratura timbre and giving the role of the prince to a soprano, the composer offers us a vocal festival accompanied by a rich and varied orchestration that oscillates between Mozartian delicacy, baroque quotations and great romantic nuances.
