The Comedian's Son
By Fernando Fernán Gómez
Starring José Sacristán
If the writer Delibes taught me to look, the comedian Fernán Gómez taught me to listen.
For a few years, I had the privilege of being close to him and listening to him.
Listening to him, among others, tells the story of Fernanda López, the blonde, his great-grandmother, from whom he inherited his hair color and who was from Valdelaguna, a town next to Chinchón, my town. And of Carolina Gómez, a seamstress, the grandmother who took care of his childhood like Natividad López, her needlework, and mine.
We exchanged and shared commonalities in so many stories. Stories of survival, of absences, fears, hopes, dreams: of freedom, of 'becoming someone,' of being—why not? Jackie Cooper, 'the man from Treasure Island,' and also 'a writer of Salgari novels.'
Firm, proudly resolute in his melancholy, Fernando's voice sounded as he remembered those times, as he remembered himself.
Echoes of Baroja, Galdós, Barea... hovered in that memory.
Also, through Fernando's, I fancied the voices of his grandmother and mine, the distant one of Carola, his mother, María, the illiterate maid fond of poetry, Florentina and her boyfriend's "damn, those legs."
The voice of the dreamy child, the voice of the deserving man with his handful of pilongas chestnuts in his pocket, the voice of the young man in love, in a hurry, in a big hurry...
Voices in one voice.
I trust you will listen to me with the same or similar emotion with which I listened to him, the seamstress's grandson, the comedian's son.
