The Rebellious Girl
Clásicos de la Lírica Theatre Company
A new production where the Clásicos de la Lírica Theatre Company strives to unite tradition and modernity, with a meticulously crafted staging. Everything matters: every element of the actors' and actresses' costumes, every accessory, every piece of furniture inside the Madrid tenement courtyard—everything is carefully considered so that its role in the play carries the weight it deserves.
In addition to the complete play written by Ruperto Chapí, excerpts from works by Chueca, Moreno Torraba, and Amadeo Vives are included.
Synopsis
The story unfolds in the courtyard of a tenement courtyard in early 20th-century Madrid. There, Felipe, one of the residents, boasts of being the only one who can resist Mari Pepa's charms, yet he is completely in love with her. The same is true for her; she feels jealous when she sees Felipe approaching other women, and although they are both in love, they feign a disdain they don't actually feel.
This constant tug-of-war between them to keep the affair a secret, fueled by the men's constant drooling and the men buzzing around them like flies, takes the theme of jealousy to its extreme. Meanwhile, the women of the house, fed up with their partners' behavior, plot a revenge plot with Chupitos' help, staging a fake blind date between Mari Pepa and each of them.
