The Tango of Carlos Gardel Returns

A fascinating tribute to two great tango legends: Carlos Gardel and Alfredo Le Pera.
Conceived by renowned Argentine singer Analía Bueti—who holds the "Argentina Nation Brand" distinction for her tireless work promoting tango worldwide—and created and directed by distinguished Argentine musician Juan Esteban Cuacci (an arranger and composer who inherited his passion for tango from his family, specifically his father—a prominent Buenos Aires tango orchestra conductor—and his aunt, the great tango singer Susana Rinaldi, for whom he served as pianist for decades).

"Lo que el tango se llevó" (What Tango Took Away) brings together a cast of top-tier artists to once again present the art of music, song, and dance, delivering the emotion only tango can provide and the high quality these artists are known for.

The Show
Through various musical scenes that weave together music, wit, and emotion, the show takes us to an imagined encounter between Gardel and Le Pera in a magnificent New York loft. Here, past and present blend in a series of situations that reveal glimpses into the lives and works of these tango legends.

The story begins as a pianist rehearses various Gardel tangos with a singer; in his imagination, he envisions lyricist Le Pera in a moment of great inspiration. After the initial surprise, a dialogue unfolds between the two characters, featuring moments of humor and deep emotion. Gardel and Le Pera’s tangos are performed throughout surprising scenes that transport the audience back to tango's golden age.

The show is a musical celebration that unfolds through various playful, intricate situations—executed with great mastery by the artists—featuring tangos like "Por una Cabeza" and "El día que me quieras," as well as the festive atmosphere of "Sol tropical" and "Rubias de NY," taking the audience on a journey of unforgettable moments and diverse emotions. At times, the show’s atmosphere shifts, becoming more intimate and reflective. Le Pera’s spectral figure resumes his role as a writer, while the rest of the cast explores themes of loneliness, melancholy, and nostalgia through performances of tangos such as "Lejana Tierra Mía," "Soledad," "Mi Bs As Querido," "Cuando Tú No Estás," "Cuesta Abajo," and "Volver."

This tribute to the tango of Le Pera and Gardel—in which history, music, picaresque storytelling, and dance unfold across various musical scenes—brings together two exceptional musicians, a vocalist, and two dance couples on a single stage for a unique event.
