Description

Come and witness matches of Europe's oldest sport in the heart of the city.
Known as the "Cathedral" of Valencian pilota, the Trinquet Pelayo hosts exciting matches of this traditional sport every Thursday and Saturday.

It is the oldest active sports venue in Europe—founded in 1868—and is located right next to the North Station.

Do you recognize it, but don't know what Valencian pilota is? It's our native sport, a gentleman's game whose origins date back to the time of the Greeks and Romans.

Unlike Basque pelota, here the players face each other in an enclosed court, striking the leather ball with their bare hands—protected only by thimbles and tape—to launch it over a rope.

Still not entirely clear, or do you know what it's about but haven't had the chance to see a live match?

So grab a ticket, step through the doors of the pelota court, and let the sound of the ball and the atmosphere created by the fans do the rest.

And if you like, you can round off your experience by having dinner at Pelayo Gastro Trinquet—which is right there—and trying traditional dishes like titaina or cod fritters under the impressive sculpture of a pelota player's hand that dominates the dining room.
