Hovering between poetry and design, theater and literature, documentary and musical, the cinema of Austrian filmmaker Antoinette Zwirchmayr (b. 1989) presents landscapes and portraits that seem to have been recorded long before the emergence of humanity—or long after its total extinction. It is hard to watch these films without feeling like a spy in a place where one does not belong. Is this cinema, or something else entirely—something as yet unnamed? Even within the realm of experimental film—a field supposedly free and unbound by genre conventions—it has become increasingly rare to encounter a truly unclassifiable work. Zwirchmayr’s work stands out as perhaps one of the most brilliant exceptions, defined by its clash of raw wildness and formal perfection.
