"It's the kind of movie that only a director whose heart is in tune with his mind can make. It is a political and angry film, but also a beautiful film, full of humor and a deep love for human nature. Generally, films that deal with controversial issues tend to be overly angry or sentimental. Sembene, who made the film at the age of 81, must have lived long enough, suffered long enough and laughed long enough to have found the wisdom of age." (Roger Ebert)
