The End of a Great Dynasty: The Last Dinosaurs on Earth

Non-avian dinosaurs dominated the Earth for 150 million years until their extinction 66 million years ago. Since the first dinosaur bones were found in 1676 in England, hundreds of sites spanning the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods have been discovered. But when it comes to the last traces of dinosaurs, only a few scattered areas around the world (central United States, Brazil, the Pyrenees, Romania, India, and China) give us clues about who these dinosaurs were and what the ecosystems they inhabited were like.

Science is still debating whether the real cause of their extinction was the impact of a large asteroid at Chicxulub or whether they were already at a point of irreversible decline. In this lecture, Dr. Galobart will explain how these fossil sites scattered around the world, and especially those in the Pyrenees, provide clues to understanding the final moments of the dinosaurs from a geological perspective.

Presented by:

Ángel Galobart, graduate in Biological Sciences and PhD in Geological Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Head of the Dinosaur Ecosystems Research Group at the Miquel Crusafont Institute of Paleontology and director of the associated museums. Since 2001, he has been involved in research at Mesozoic sites in the eastern Iberian Peninsula. He has over 400 publications in scientific journals.
