Rineke Dijkstra and Philippe Parreno offer a unique approach to these works.
“I ALWAYS CAREFULLY LOOK FOR THOSE MOMENTS WHEN PEOPLE ARE UNWATCHED.” RINEKE DIJKSTRA
“A MAGIC SHOW BETWEEN A SPACE THAT IS LOST PLAYING AT BEING AN IMAGE AND IMAGES THAT TRY TO PRODUCE A SPACE.” PHILIPPE PARRENO
The ”la Caixa” Foundation recently acquired two audiovisual works for its Contemporary Art Collection that offer a fresh perspective on Goya’s Black Paintings and Rembrandt’s The Night Watch.
Their joint exhibition offers a look at the art of the past through interaction with the public. Rineke Dijkstra's Night Watching is a video installation that records the comments of different people as they observe Rembrandt's The Night Watch, without ever actually seeing it. Some connect the painting to their own lives, while others examine it within the historical context of art. Meanwhile, Philippe Parreno's immersive film La quinta del sordo (The Deaf Man's House) takes us to the house where Goya created his Black Paintings, recreating a space that no longer exists.
