Near-Earth Space, which includes the Moon, Mars and asteroids, will be where we will be able to undertake numerous explorations and research in the next century, through the development of manned missions. In some cases, with the establishment of semi-permanent, and even permanent, bases. We are living in crucial moments of scientific-technical flourishing that is causing a true sociocultural revolution and leading, almost without being aware of it, to a paradigm shift at a global level, on a planetary scale.

From a scientific point of view, Near-Earth Space constitutes a connecting thread between the past and the future. On the one hand, it allows us to better understand the past of the Earth and of life and to delve into the physical-chemical and geological materials and processes, which contain the keys to better understanding our origins. Likewise, our satellite, Mars, and some asteroids are also fundamental places for the future, in our process of expansion towards the universe, through which humanity is opening up to the cosmos in all its dimensions.

Science is undoubtedly the reference that is making us advance in this challenge, but fiction is also helping us to open our minds to possible new developments and ideas, perhaps unusual, but not impossible to achieve. Almost without realizing it, we are taking part and contributing to a transfer of life outside of Earth, which will turn our descendants into the future interplanetary generation. In this talk, some of these questions are raised that contextualize the work.

Jesús Martínez Frias

Doctor in Geological Sciences (Complutense University of Madrid/1986). Expert in Meteorites, Planetary Geology and Astrobiology. After completing his Bachelor's and PhD studies, he obtained a British Council Scholarship (UK), a FPI pre-doctoral scholarship from the Ministry of Education and Science (UCM), a CSIC postdoctoral scholarship abroad (UK) and a CSIC postdoctoral scholarship in Spain (MNCN). He has carried out training and research stays at the Universities of Leeds (UK), Heidelberg (Germany), Toronto (Canada) and California-San Diego (USA). He is a Scientific Researcher at the Institute of Geosciences, IGEO (CSIC-UCM), where he founded the CSIC Research Group on Meteorites and Planetary Geosciences.

Founder and President of the Spanish Network of Planetology and Astrobiology (REDESPA) and of the Commission on Planetary Geology of the Geological Society of Spain. Honorary Professor of the Department of Bioengineering and Aerospace Engineering at the Carlos III University of Madrid and Scientific Collaborator of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory of the University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo. Member of the science teams for the Mars missions: NASA-MSL (Curiosity rover), NASA-Mars-2020 (Perseverance rover), ESA-ExoMars and collaborator on the ESA (International Space Station) BIOMEX project. Academician of the Royal Academies of Doctors and of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Spain.

Among his research, he has participated in more than 50 national and international research projects (NASA, ESA, ICSU, NATO, IUGS/UNESCO) and several contracts with companies, highlighting his studies on meteorites, impact craters and megacryometeors; his participation in the NASA/SETI flight for the study of the Leonids (Leonid MAC Mission); the realization of scientific campaigns for the study of extreme environments as planetary analogues in Antarctica, Iceland, Mauritania and Costa Rica; the scientific direction related to the manufacture of regolithic simulants for the Moon, Mars and asteroids; and scientific direction of the launch of a picosatellite on a Space X Falcon 9 rocket using Lanzarote basalt in relation to lunar habitability (currently in orbit).
