Description
(White Material, Claire Dennis, 2009) Int.: Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Lambert, Nicolas Duvauchelle, William Nadylam. France, Cameroon. 35mm YOU. Color. 106' In an atmosphere of imminent war in an African country, a white woman tries to protect her family and her coffee plantation. "I like the ellipsis. Here I have used it, but it was not planned. I used it because I didn't want to see Maria cry. What I like about the ellipsis is that there is an empty space that you have to go through. [...] It's like going through a very large ditch and wondering if you're going to get your legs. I've only seen that in the movies. It is as if it belonged to the cinema from the start. The ending becomes allegorical because the head is cut off, but before that the jump is made.
There are so many explanations to give at the time of writing the script, during the shooting and editing, that I am happy to see that, however, I do not explain the essentials.
And all the better." (Claire Dennis) Second screening in September.
