An activity by Caligrama Cultural Projects.
Food is closely related to cultural identity. We wonder why some cultures prefer some foods over others, or why the categories of what is edible and what is not are different. In all cultures, there are rules about what to eat, how to prepare it, and how to choose what to eat. When, how, where, and with whom to consume it. Within a single culture, food varies depending on status, gender, age, time of day, and context. And food plays a fundamental role in social events. These and other topics, such as the symbolic representations of food, the relationship between health and nutrition, and changes and trends in eating habits, are the subject of study in the anthropology of food.

We invite you to the MNA (National Museum of Natural History) to discover the gastronomy of the Amazon, its ways of life, and one of the most important foods in the lives of these peoples: cassava. We will discover several museum exhibits related to the cultivation and consumption of cassava, and we will participate in a very special activity in the workshop: we will learn how to tie maitos (corn stalks), as many people in the Amazon do, to cook food on the grill, steam, or in the oven. Are you up for collecting recipes from around the world?
