Description

Sixteen-year-old Maria Chapdelaine lives with her family on land near the Péribonka River in rural Quebec in the early 1900s. As true pioneers, the Chapdelaine family strives to push back the forest. In a home where not even physical exhaustion can dampen the warmth of family life, Maria finds herself in a profound dilemma. François Paradis, a free-spirited fur trapper and lumberjack promises Maria to come back in the spring to marry her, while Lorenzo Surprenant arrives at her farm offering her a comfortable existence in an American city.
