Agnès Varda for Deaf and
Hard-of-Hearing Visitors
Visit with sign language

26 October and 30 November 2024Access
A commented tour of the exhibition made by a deaf person signing in Catalan Sign Language (LSC), accompanied by an interpreter who will provide voice so that hearing people can also follow the visit. In addition, we have a magnetic loop so that hearing impaired people who use hearing aids or cochlear implants can also enjoy the activity.
This exhibition is about the photographer, filmmaker and visual artist Agnès Varda (1928-2019). It explains the work and language of a relatively unknown creator who was characterized by her personal, humanistic, universal, creative and empathetic gaze.

Varda explained the cultural, social and political changes of her time using a very modern visual language. The most common themes of her work are social exclusion, sometimes cruel, new ways of life and women’s struggles. The message she aims to convey is the pleasure of discovering and sharing, and the importance of modernizing our outlook.

Some of her films received very good reviews, such as Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962), Sans toit ni loi (1985) and Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000). These three films are good examples of her innovative cinema. Varda combined documentary and fiction, life and representation, reality and dream, and the natural and the artificial.

Despite being valued by critics, her films and photographs are relatively little known to the public. She was part of the Nouvelle Vague, or New Wave, a French cinema movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

Over time, Varda has gained greater recognition for her personal style, her importance and her ability to inspire. For all of these reasons, Varda is considered one of the most important creators of the latter half of the 20th and the early 21st centuries. What is most appreciated about her work is the fact that its style remains modern, even in the age of digital image.
