Ten years after On the Town premiered, Donen's sailors no longer marvel at skyscrapers and retain little in common.
Is a depressing musical possible? The third film that Kelly co-directed with Donen, after On the Town and Singin' in the Rain, was to be a prologue to the first. Three sailors meet again, as they promised, ten years after the end of the Second World War to find that time has changed them bravely. Each will see in the other the image of their failure.

It is a musical dominated by melancholy with anthological numbers of the genre, such as the one about the lids of the garbage containers, the one of Cyd Charisse in the boxing ring or the one performed by Kelly on roller skates. "Dance integrates harmoniously into the action and is the main means by which the authors define us in their characters. We never understand them better than when they dance. The admirable dance that opens the film tells us everything about the friendship of the three soldiers" (José Luis Guarner).
