A rich family girl is engaged to an architect, but has many doubts about whether they will eventually marry.

A trip to a Sicilian island where she disappears and the appearance of other characters, such as her best friend, complicate the things and feelings of this intimate drama. The film begins with the so-called "trilogy of incommunicado detention", which Antonioni completes with La notte and L'eclisse.

These are stories about the crisis of feelings, built around female portraits, to which Vitti contributes decisively. In L'avventura, Antonioni's muse plays a character who, with his eagerness and inability to act, responds perfectly to the filmmaker's universe, although the film, misunderstood, received the rejection of much of the critique of the Cannes Film Festival.
