LATIN AMERICAN FILMMAKERS
October 8, 14, and 22 at Cines Girona, Barcelona
In collaboration with Casa América Catalunya
Since 2015, MIFDB—in collaboration with Casa América Catalunya—has organized this program focused on feminist filmmaking in Latin America. Over the years, it has showcased works ranging from those of key pioneers in the field to contemporary filmmakers and emerging creators, with a special emphasis on non-fiction cinema.
This edition of *Latin American Filmmakers* combines fiction, documentary, and series, focusing on current Brazilian creative work. Three projects break the mold of established formats and narratives to address the experience of youth in Brazil in the face of an unjust police and judicial system. These films are built through collective play and a critical, vibrant perspective; directors Lúcia Murat, Lillah Halla, and Caru Alves de Souza worked side-by-side with the young people who subsequently appear on screen.

Spanish premiere
In *Hora do recreio*, veteran filmmaker Lúcia Murat plays with formats and genres to reflect on education in Brazil, collaborating with the film's protagonists: students from various schools in Rio de Janeiro's *favelas*.
* Virtual Q&A with the film's director, Lúcia Murat.

Levante
Lillah Halla, 2023, Brazil, 99 min, Original version with Catalan subtitles and SPS (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing)
Sofia, a 17-year-old, faces an unwanted pregnancy just before a championship that will determine her future—and that of the queer volleyball team she belongs to. *Levante*—which means "uprising" in Portuguese—serves as a historical record of a specific era: a condemnation of the rise of fascism under the Bolsonaro regime, presented as a work of fiction filmed with overflowing pop-funk energy.
* Presentation and Q&A with Lillah Halla, the film's director, who will be available for interviews.
Thursday, October 22 | 8:00 PM | Cines Girona
De Menor
Caru Alves de Souza, Brazil, 69 min, 2025, Original version with Catalan subtitles and SPS
In this television series, Caru Alves de Souza explores the Brazilian judicial system and the prejudices that shape how it judges the lives of children and adolescents. With a script developed in collaboration with the cast and a staging approach that reveals the mechanisms of representation, the director demystifies the workings of institutions and power structures, creating a critical distance that invites reflection. *De Menor* consists of six episodes loosely inspired by the filmmaker's 2013 debut feature film of the same name; this screening will present episodes 1 and 3. The director previously presented her feature film *Meu nome é Bagdá* at the MIFDB in 2020.
* Virtual Q&A with Caru Alves de Souza, the director.
