A jug band is a musical ensemble rooted in early 20th-century American folk music, particularly in the Southern United States. Its distinctive characteristic is the use of unconventional instruments, often crafted by the musicians themselves from everyday objects. These "homemade" instruments include, among others, the jug (a ceramic or glass container used to create a sound similar to a trumpet or bass), as well as washboards, cigar box guitars, and other recycled instruments.

The jug band is known for its joyful, improvisational, and energetic sound, which blends genres such as blues, ragtime, swing, and jazz. Over the years, jug bands were a popular form of entertainment in both rural and urban areas, at parties, fairs, and clubs, bringing African American roots music to a wider audience. On this occasion, we welcome a magnificent example of these ensembles to Soberao Jazz: Diógenes Jug Band.

With a stage presence that evokes the spirit of the 1920s and 30s, their visual style perfectly complements their musical offering, transporting the audience to a bygone era. With their traditional instruments, their repertoire of swing and blues, and their unmistakable vintage aesthetic, this band invites us on a journey to the early decades of the 20th century.
