Don Pasquale, a decadent old man living a real nightmare, decides to take Norina as his wife in order to cancel the plans of his nephew Ernesto. But Ernesto, with the help of Dr. Malatesta, agrees to catch Don Pasquale in his own trap, entrusting the role of bride to Norina, his own fiancée. First docile and then absolutely intractable, Norina excels at the game of false appearances. The clash between two generations fuels the comedy while also producing an undercurrent of nostalgia.

Does an older man have the right to love and live? The leap into the void of the one she loves with courage. Don Pasquale, premiered at the Théâtre Italien in Paris in 1843 (where Donizetti had been based since 1838), presents a comic story of hoax upon hoax; beloved title that has caused more than one smile to the public of many generations. Already from the brilliant opening, capolavoro that ignores the Rossinian model, a lively elegance and a perfect symbiosis between music and text develops. Masterpiece of a genius where the music is already eminently theatrical.

Starting with Donizetti's radiant score, legend has it, written in just 10 days, Damiano Michieletto's artful production remains fun and as full of life as never before. With sincerity and dramatic depth, in this present-day proposal we recognize the characters as archetypes of the commedia dell'arte but of our small world and, immediately, they are moving. Michieletto blazes a trail to the heart of a seemingly playful work, considered the apotheosis of opera buffa. The melodic richness, one of the main musical aspects, underlines the farce; an extremely cruel farce like Verdi's punishment of Falstaff.
