Description

Puccini can be considered as the engineer who completed the bridge begun by Verdi and who directly connects the Italian tradition with modernity. In his last works (including this Trittico) the most modern forms of Debussy or Strauss are already anticipated. Without renouncing his special stamp, Puccini signs these three jewels: a thriller of the Seine (Il tabarro), the suffering, death and glorification of a mother-nun, whose son has been taken from her (Suor Angelica), and a satire that speaks with humor of a will and the impersonation of the deceased to change it (Gianni Schicchi). Three independent operas with seemingly unconnected narratives. But are they? These three one-act operas, which Giacomo Puccini amalgamated under the title Il trittico, are fragments of reality. Instead of trying and failing to portray the entire world in one long opera, similar to an epic novel, it highlights three historical events, united in one piece of music, which seeks to intensely convey every nuance of human emotion: from the relentless coldness of heart to burning passion, passing through avarice, mischief or parody. Lotte de Beer's production of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich offers a unique show in which the action takes place in a space enclosed by curved walls and in which the three scores are connected by the idea of death. An excellent directing job makes all the characters shine. A luxury cast that includes Lise Davidsen, Ermonela Jaho, Ambrogio Maestri, Daniela Barcellona and Ruth Iniesta, among others, will make this Trittico an exceptional moment in the season.
