Description

Leonora and Manrico, a couple that embodies freedom and idealism, is doomed by jealousy and the threat of power. The count of Luna, punitive and sadistic, has an obsessive weakness: Leonora; while the mysterious and enigmatic Azucena guards a secret that will destroy them all. With her machinations, he will turn Leonora into an immortal heroine condemned to sacrifice. The mechanisms of the drama and a psychological depth underlined by a radiant and expansive music that overflows imagination make Il trovatore one of the pinnacles of the repertoire. Sincerity and purity are the traits of Leonora, here presented by Saioa Hernández and Hibla Gerzmava. Vittorio Grigolo, Juan Jesús Rodríguez and Ksenia Dudnikova complete this story of love and revenge in 15th-century Aragon, in which the characters are victims of the gypsy's pathological visions. The production signed by Àlex Ollé for the Paris Opera, which is inspired by the First World War, portrays the consequences of a war between brothers in which irrational actions leave no room for reflection. An exhausting trench warfare where humans are abstract and ghostly characters full of hate. An outstanding cast for this tragedy, premiered in Rome in 1853 (and in 1854 at the Liceu), in which Verdi shows the weight of the past and the impossibility of overcoming it. In the era of anti-racial movements against the death of George Floyd, the exotic vision of minorities from the point of view of the 19th century helps us to denounce the substrata and stereotypes that have forged our gaze.
