Description

Schallfeld is a contemporary music ensemble based in Graz (Austria). The collective has captured the interest of the Austrian and international public in recent years due to its virtuosity and refined chamber sound, as well as its attention to concert formats, which seek to create a new dimension of listening. Schallfeld was founded in 2013 by alumni of the ensemble Klangforum Wien.

Its programming reflects the diversity and artistic interests of its members, from 8 nationalities. In recent years, Schallfeld has emerged on the international contemporary music scene through his programs focused on current composers, on new concert concepts, as well as through his work with live electronics and improvisation.

In addition to its stable season in Graz, the ensemble has participated in festivals such as Wien Modern, Impuls Graz, Klangspuren Schwaz, the Darmstadt Summer Courses, Afekt (Estonia), Romaeuropa (Rome), Bludenzer Tagen zeitgemässer Musik (Bludenz), Signale (Graz), Poznan Musical Spring (Poland), and at the Daegu International Festival (South Korea), among others. During the years 2016 and 2017, Schallfeld has been selected by the Austrian Ministry of Culture and Foreign Affairs as representatives of the NASOM (New Austrian Sound of Music), a program dedicated to promoting outstanding young Austrian artists abroad. Since 2015, Schallfeld has been the ensemble-in-residence of the European network Ulysses.

Schallfeld has been an ensemble in residence at courses in Darmstadt (2016), Impuls (2015, 2017, 2019, 2021), the University of California San Diego (2020), Harvard University (2020) and has collaborated steadily since 2015 with the institute of electronic music from Graz. Schallfeld is also involved in pedagogical activities and theater projects for children and adults.

The collective has received funding from the EU (Youth in Action), Music Austria (MICA) and KulturKontakt Austria. Currently, the ensemble receives support from the city of Graz, the state of Styria and the Austrian Government, as well as the Graz University of Music and Performing Arts.
