Description
Carmen (St. Margarethen Open Air Opera)
The Roman Quarry of St. Margarethen (Austria), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a setting that no indoor theater set can match. The vastness of the space is used to recreate a Seville that seems carved directly from the earth. This version, directed by the visionary Arnaud Bernard, redefines the scale of operatic drama, using the imposing rock walls of the St. Margarethen Quarry as a living stage that amplifies the tragedy and eroticism of the work. The chemistry between Marco di Sapia (Escamillo) and Sofia Vinnik (Carmen) is palpable even from a distance, while Vanessa Vasquez's arias manage to dwarf the rock through sheer human emotion, reminding us that, despite its monumental scale, Carmen remains a story about the human heart.
