Description

The in-depth exposition in the imagination of the Catalan writer Mercè Rodoreda focuses on the radical nature of modern literature. Curated by Neus Penalba, the exhibition proposes a survey of the great themes of this work, encompassing them with a network of signifiers that, as well as the arcs and branches of a tree, are contained in complexes and intertwined ramifications of meaning.
The poetry of this great novel·list of the 20th century is made up of certain gestures that are repeated in texts and novels –spy, watch, watch die, ennuegar-se, ofegar, transform-se...–, with abundant cases in gardens and senses, streets and places, but above all it is full of trees and botanical trops.

Ending in Rodoreda's writing, which is always innocent and cruel, childish and macabre, realistic and fantastic, clear and dark, implies embracing the inseparable unit of contraris that defines the imagination: fer veure, in short, that, at the cost of the childhood garden with the Gurguí, there are cactus rebecs, wisteria gegants, suffering flowers, forests of suicides and all mena of malvestats.

Tot concebent l'espai com un gran bosc que orgànicamente los diferents sales, l'itinerari de la mostra explora l'obra i l'escriptora mitjançant aquest simil arbrat: les arrels literàries i vitals i l'experiència del desarrelament provocat per l'exili; the vertebrating trunks of the experience of war, trunks full of grops and evil; the branches that fly to touch the great names of Western culture –writers, painters and filmmakers–; the abilities that fill ocells and scrub the cell, and also the keys, that end up germinating and donating fruit in the imagination of a group of visual artists who create fish ex novo, inspired by Rodoreda's work.

The exhibition presents in dialogue the literary work of the author with the plastic and audiovisual work of artists from different periods, and also incorporates original documents from the funds of the Fundació Mercè Rodoreda, photographs and contemporary works of artists such as Èlia Llach, Mar Arza, Cabosanroque, Oriol Vilapuig or Carlota Subirós, among others. Martí Sales is responsible for the selection of new artistic projects.
